Joe began this gathering with a discussion of the relative merits of shorter versus longer meditation sessions. This was followed by a practice session of the stages of grounding and centering, followed by tuning in both to the inbreath and outbreath. We then worked with focusing only on the outbreath, a practice that Joe was introduced to by Trungpa Rinpoche 50 years ago. The key is to mix your mind with the breath, and then as breath dissolves into space, your self-consciousness dissolves into space. We concluded with a short session of compassion meditation using the tonglen practice of taking away struggle and suffering from ourselves and others, and sending out peace and happiness to ourselves and others.
